We did and had a lovely Sunday lunch with them. Then on to the seal colony at Cape Cross …apparently one of the largest seal colonies on the planet. Certainly the smelliest!br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6080/6054873223_1617605eb0_z.jpg alt />br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6070/6053308476_53f03da47f_z.jpg alt />br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6088/6053594391_86458af9d1.jpg alt />br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6188/6053301356_ee46f1158b.jpg alt />br />Amazing to see hear…. and smell… I can see why there is such controversy about culling seals they look gorgeous, Cape seals have lovely little ears but adults consume 250kg of fish per year and there are hundreds of thousands in this one colony and the water for miles around is brown/green with shit. Cant understand why they dont spread out, must be the animal equivalent of Mumbai which is apparently the largest city in the world by population density rather than Tokyo which has the most populous urban area!br />We saw the beautiful colours of the lichen fields which are an amazing example of symbiosis between two living things an alga and a fungus. The fungus absorbs moisture from the air and the alga contains the chlorophyll …br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6085/6053316352_781cae1863.jpg alt />br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6066/6052770429_5420e0f0f8.jpg alt />br />How anything can live in this desolate environment is a miracle!br />And of course as it was the Skeleton Coast we saw the ship wrecks.br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6199/6053276140_e8daf78b05.jpg alt />br />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6206/6052710313_1b293f1207.jpg alt />/p> /div>!-- .entry-content --> div classentry-utility> span classcat-links> span classentry-utility-prep entry-utility-prep-cat-links>Posted in/span> a hrefhttp://thevanplan.com/category/uncategorized relcategory tag>Uncategorized/a> /span> span classmeta-sep>|/span> span classcomments-link>a hrefhttp://thevanplan.com/windhoek-and-on-to-the-skeleton-coast#respond>Leave a comment/a>/span> /div>!-- .entry-utility --> /div>!-- #post-773 --> div idpost-751 classpost-751 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-uncategorized> h2 classentry-title>a hrefhttp://thevanplan.com/maun-and-north-into-namibia relbookmark>Maun and north into Namibia/a>/h2> div classentry-meta> span classmeta-prep meta-prep-author>Posted on/span> a hrefhttp://thevanplan.com/maun-and-north-into-namibia title11:54 am relbookmark>span classentry-date>August 6, 2011/span>/a> span classmeta-sep>by/span> span classauthor vcard>a classurl fn n hrefhttp://thevanplan.com/author/rory titleView all posts by rory>rory/a>/span> /div>!-- .entry-meta --> div classentry-content> p>Decided after our flight over the delta to do a boat trip and see everything from another perspective. We saw the most gorgeous bird life but no gamebr />img decodingasync srchttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6006/6013874377_d21f50fab2_z.jpg alt />br />We also followed our noses to find a wonderful ceramic studio in the middle of the bush.br />/a>a hrefhttp://botswanatrophies.homestead.com/> Okavango Ceramics/a> and got ourselves invited to supper by Jan and Virginia when we got lost!br />Uneventful drive north along the delta towards Namibia but lots of flooding and apparently the water level is still rising. Our last night at the Maun backpackers saw two houses flood and a 4×4 go into the water on the causeway to the campsite.
