Recently I started exploring Chord Melody playing and Jazzguitar in general and I am overwhelmed by the volume of informationavailable. There are tons of great resources for learning variousaspects of Jazz theory and technique - and Ive got way too manybrowser tabs open - so this site will be my continuing mind map of thematerial Im exploring. Hopefully it will be interesting to theinternet passer-by as well./p>/div>h1>Jazz Guitar Resources/h1>div classtwo-col>p>As I run across resources Ill post links here - mostly fortracking my progress and for my own future learning. So far Ive beenstruck by the difference between the Jazz material Ive encounteredand the Rock/Blues material Ive studied: many rock or blues lessonsteach a single technique - maybe a lick, maybe a sweep or a pull-offor a harmonic. They may spend 10 minutes minutely examining themechanics of the technique - pick angle, hand placement, pickingdirection, etc - and then it may take my an hour or two of practice tobring the technique up to speed. Frequently the lessons assumeabsolute beginner status - telling you the names of the notes and whatfret positions to finger and showing you in detail exactly whatshappening in picking and fretting hands./p>p>In contrast Jazz instruction seems to have a higher barrier toentry. It frequently seems denser, more theoretical and requires amuch greater investment of time to apply - something likemodification x to chord y makes it a substitution for chord z in somecontexts - here are three different grips - work them out across alltwelve keys in and four different positions... One concept can leadto 10 or 20 hours of work to understand how to apply and work out allthe variations. But ifyou took out the explanations and the glossary it could be condensedto about 3 double-sided pages with the grips he uses and the examplesto harmonize. Of course thats enough material to keep me busy for sixmonths!/p>/div>h1>Keep at it!/h1>div classtwo-col>p>I guess my point is that the novice to Jazz guitar (thats me)shouldnt be discouraged by the denseness of the lessons or the depthof the material. I read the Martino essay above, but I dontunderstand it yet. Thats ok - Ill work through it and revisit it ina few months.
