This model of decentralized system has been classified asi>peer-to-peer/i> by recent popular media. /p>p>Main research goals of the Free Haven Project: ul> li>b>Anonymity:/b>We try to meet this goal for all parties: the publishers that insertdocuments, the readers that retrieve documents, and the servers thatstore documents. We are in the process of designing and developing afree, low-latency, two-way mixnet for forward-anonymous communication.li>b>Accountability:/b>We consider methods for achieving accountability without sacrificinganonymity. In particular, were researching reputation and micropaymentschemes, which allow us to limit the damage done by servers which misbehave.li>b>Persistence:/b> The publisher of a document -- not the servers holding thedocument -- determines its lifetime.li>b>Flexibility:/b>The system functions smoothly as peers dynamically join or leave./ul>/p>p> The Free Haven project began in December 1999 as a researchproject initially comprised of several ahrefhttp://www.mit.edu/>MIT/a> students to design, implement, anddeploy a functional data haven. Weve put it on the backburner for now because it still has four main unsolvedproblems before it can be robust enough: /p>ul>li> The reputation system is tricky and wont work. We need toreplace the gossip/credibility system with a mechanism for verifiabletransactions. See a hrefhttp://freehaven.net/doc/econp2p03/>thisdraft paper/a> for more details.li> Retrieval is currently broadcast, which is too inefficient. Wereletting other projects work on solutions here, and well pick ourfavorite when the time comes. Notably, it would be nice to base anaddressing scheme on consistent hashing, so its easy to know whichnode is currently hosting a piece of data, but hard to find the actuallocation of that node.li> There is no anonymous communications infrastructure. This is thearea were focusing on currently. See a hrefhttp://mixminion.net/>theMixminion page/a> for our current work in that direction. Im alsoworking on second-generation a hrefhttps://www.torproject.org/>Onion Routing/a>(tcp-level anonymous communications rather than message-based), whichwill provide weaker anonymity but lower latency.li>The incentives need to be better aligned. See ahrefhttp://freehaven.net/anonbib/#redblue>this paper/a> by GeorgeDanezis and Ross Anderson about how distributing files randomly overthe network may be the wrong approach./ul>/ul>!-- end of body -->/td>/tr>/table>table border0 cellspacing0 cellpadding0>tr>td width700>hr noshade size1>font faceHelvetica, Arial, sans-serif color#808080 size2>Site last updated on June 12th, 2009.br>Check the b>News/b> section for information on the latest content updates./font>/td>/tr>/table>/body>/html>
