Despite its daunting complexity, Liszt undertook the task, driven partly by commercial interests, producing both a solo piano transcription and a version for two pianos. Hummel, like Beethoven, was a piano virtuoso, althoughhis self-confidence was said to have been shattered by Beethovens arrival in Vienna where both composers spent most of their lives.Hummel, nevertheless, eventually succeeded Joseph Haydn in the role of Kapellmeister in the court of Prince NikolausEsterházy II, after Haydns death in 1809. Two years earlier Esterházy commissioned Beethoven to write a Mass forhis wife - the Mass in C. Hummel subsequently wrote his Mass in D a year later. In this concert, SJSC has paired the two masses, allowing comparison of the styles and gifts of these two important classical contemporaries./p>/div>/div>br/>br/>div classrow text-center>div classcol-md-3>img classimg-responsive src./img/Winchester Orchestra - Rach 3.png>/div>div classcol-md-9>h3 classservice-heading>Tamami Honma performs Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 3/h3>p classtext-info>7pm Sunday March 17/p>div>ul classlist-unstyled>b>li>Griffes Pleasure Dome of Kublan/li>li>Hanson Symphony No. 2 (Romantic)/li>li>Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3/li>/b>br/>li>Tamami Honma, piano/li>li>Gabriel Sakakeeny, guest conductor/li>li>a hrefhttps://www.winchesterorchestra.com>Winchester Orchestra/a>/li>/ul>/div>p>br/>Lincoln Glen Church,2700 Booksin Ave, San Jose, California/p>/div>/div>br/>br/>div classrow text-center>div classcol-md-3>img classimg-responsive src./img/SaratogaSymphony2019_Jan.jpg>/div>div classcol-md-9>h3 classservice-heading>Tamami Honma performs Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 4/h3>p classtext-info>3pm Sunday January 27/p>div>ul classlist-unstyled>b>li>Lyaponov Polonaise/li>li>Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 4/li>li>Glazunov Cortege Solennel/li>li>Rimsky-Korsakov Suite from the Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh/li>/b>br/>li>Tamami Honma, piano/li>li>Jason Klein, conductor/li>li>a hrefhttp://www.saratogasymphony.com/repertory012719.html>Saratoga Symphony/a>/li>/ul>/div>p>Free admissionbr/>McAfee Performing Arts and Lecture Center,20300 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga, CA 95070/p>/div>div classcol-md-12>br/>p classrow text-left>In a rare performance of Rachmaninoffs fourth and last piano concerto, we get to hear the composeroperating in a new more jazzy and experimental style. Partly because the work was quite different fromthe much more famous second and third concertos, audiences were slow to appreciate it.Rachmaninoff felt obliged to revise the concerto several times over many years significantly cutting it in length.Modern thinking suggests Rachmaninoff may have overcompensated with the later versions. This performance will feature one of the early versions, itself a rarity among rarities,as when this work does infrequently get an outing, players often opt for the shortened and perhaps less satisfying final version./p>/div>/div>div classrow>div classcol-sm-12 text-center>h3 classsection-heading>2018 Concerts/h3>/div>/div>div classrow text-center>div classcol-md-5>img classimg-responsive src./img/Schumann and Elgar.png>/div>div classcol-md-7>h3 classservice-heading>Romantic Visions & Illusions/h3>p classtext-info>4pm Sunday October 21/p>p classtext-info>7:30pm Saturday October 27/p>div>ul classlist-unstyled>b>li>Piano Quintet in E flat major Op. 44 by Robert Schumann/li>li>Piano Quintet in A minor Op. 84 by Edward Elgar/li>/b>li>Tamami Honma, piano/li>li>Julian Brown, violin/li>li>Beeri Moalem, violin/li>li>Goetz Leonhardt, viola/li>li>Walter Halvorsen, cello/li>/ul>/div>p>Good Samaritan United Methodist Church19624 Homestead Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014/p>/div>div classcol-md-12>br/>p classrow text-left>When Schumann wrote his Piano Quintet in E flat the idea of combining astring quartet with piano was new. In a modern twist on convention, the performance of the soldier will be played by a woman,singer-actor Katie Ahman, a two-time National YoungArts Winner./p>p>The musical performance tells the story of a wayward soldier, who while on leavemakes a Faustian bargain exchangingher violin (and soul) with the devil for a book that predicts the future. While the book makes the soldierimmensely wealthy, it comes at great cost to her relationships with friends and family. In the hopes of making a new life she pursues a chance at winning the hand of a sleeping princess(Dian Meechai). The devil (Khris Sanchez), though, seemingly outplayed for a while eventuallythwarts her plans./p>p>The music has the unmistakable rhythmic and tuneful dazzle of Stravinsky featuring a lively concoction of jazzy figures, dance forms and marchesfor a small group of players. Besides narrator, and actors playing soldier, princess and the devil, the music will be performed by a seven-piece ensemble of musicians conducted byCal Artes artistic director Tamami Honma./p>p>As an
