She paved the way for many other women to become entrepreneurs and business owners. In 1979, she founded Nancy’s Notions, based in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. After Nick Tacony’s passing in 1984, Ken Tacony took over leadership of the business, growing it from $3 million in sales to more than $220 million in 2014. When he’s not performing duties at Tacony Corporation, he’ll spend more time in the Florida sun and spoiling grandchildren./p>p>“You don’t always know when it’s the right time to make that change. It’s more of a feeling,” Ken Tacony said. “Sometimes it’s just the realization of what you want the balance of your life to be, to spend more time enjoying the fruits of your labor and setting the stage for the next generation.”/p>p>In addition to making leadership changes in 2016, Tacony Corporation will celebrate 70 years in business. Barickman makes a living doing what she loves: sewing, designing patterns and encouraging others to follow their dreams of starting a business. Barickman sews and designs vintage-inspired patterns, and with her new Baby Lock a hrefhttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Amy-Barickman-and-Terry-Grahl.jpg target_blank>img classalignright wp-image-1741 size-medium srchttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Amy-Barickman-and-Terry-Grahl-300x200.jpg altAmy Barickman and Terry Grahl width300 height200 srcsethttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Amy-Barickman-and-Terry-Grahl-300x200.jpg 300w, http://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Amy-Barickman-and-Terry-Grahl-150x100.jpg 150w, http://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Amy-Barickman-and-Terry-Grahl.jpg 1024w sizes(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px />/a>machines, she’ll be able to easily add embellishments, sew with a variety of materials and add the unique Sashiko stitch to projects./p>p>Amy Barickman (picture, right, with Enchanted Makeovers founder, Terry Grahl) has always enjoyed making things; creativity runs in her family, as did entrepreneurship. Her grandmother painted, made jewelry and loved weaving. Her mother was a home economics teacher and instilled in her a love of crafting. When Barickman started a teddy bear business in high school, her mom helped./p>p>“I just love developing products and marketing strategy around products,” Barickman said. “There is a rich history in generations past to use as a resource. I love using history … the materials and designs, and reinventing it for today.”/p>p>Barickman celebrates upcycling and vintage styles in many of her patterns and books, such as “Vintage Notions.” In fact, “Vintage Notions” was inspired by Mary Brooks Picken and her work at the Women’s Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences in Scranton, Pennsylvania. One of Picken’s main goals in life was to educate women, a mindset that resonated with Barickman. An entrepreneur at heart, Barickman strives to encourage others to start their own businesses./p>p>Barickman believes that sewing can help improve people’s lives. “Whether it’s personal or economic improvement…maybe somebody is not financially secure, and learning to sew can help,” she said. “It all circles back to Mary Brooks Picken. I want to continue to share those lessons and that wisdom. What we do online today is similar to what Picken did in the 1920s.”/p>p>Barickman is referring to the various online resources available to modern sewers. With free patterns, project ideas, videos and blogs, there is a world of information out there for anyone looking to start sewing or start a profitable business. Barickman’s fans will find all of these resources through her blogs and her business, Indygo Junction. In fact, Barickman recently finished a video all about sewing with denim to help inspire other sewers./p>p>“It all started with the fact that we’d develop a pattern and then the fabrics would become obsolete,” Barickman explained. Obsolete fabrics are nothing new to most sewers, hence the popular “stash” in most sewing rooms. “We also wanted to use something different than cotton.”/p>p>In the past, Barickman has worked with James Thompson to create her own denim line. James Thompson denim is processed domestically in Delaware, which is another reason she supports the company. The denim video will cover recycling denim and sewing denim using the Baby Lock Rachel sewing machine. Patterns to complement the video can be purchased through Indygo Junction./p>p>To further inspire and educate sewers, Barickman also offers a digital magazine, Vintage Made Modern, which celebrates repurposing of vintage patterns and styles. Each month she sends a free sewing pattern, embroidery project or quilt block to subscribers. Now that Barickman is the proud owner of four new Baby Lock machines, fans can expect to see projects including the unique Sashiko stitch, creative serger techniques and more. Follow Barickman at amybarickman.com, on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest./p>p>For more information, visit a hrefhttp://www.babylock.com target_blank>Baby Lock/a> online./p>p>strong>About Baby Lock:/strong>br />Baby Lock has been a leader in the sewing industry since 1964. Baby Lock recently donated Eclipse DX four-thread sergers to 20 Baby Lock retailers, who presented the machines to their local Ryan’s Case for Smiles chapters. These chapters provide whimsical pillowcases to sick children in an effort to help them cope with the stress of life-altering illnesses and injuries./p>p>Ryan’s Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) has donors and volunteers at more than 120 chapters throughout the United States, who have contributed more than $10 million in fabrics and supplies and more than 5 million volunteer hours since the organization’s founding in 2007. In fact, on Sept. 17, 2015 – National PJ Day – Ryan’s Case for Smiles donated its 1 millionth pillowcase./p>p>Cindy Kerr, CEO and founder of Ryan’s Case for Smiles, whose son inspired her to establish the organization, said the partnership with Baby Lock grew out of a relationship with Baby Lock retailer, Steve Chubin of Steve’s Sewing and Vacuum in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. It was Chubin who initially reached out to Baby Lock President Steve Jeffery./p>p>“Last year we were fortunate to receive 10 sergers. In April I met with Steve Jeffery in St. Louis to explore ideas on how we could formulate a more official partnership,” Kerr said. “This year Baby Lock donated sergers to 20 of our chapters. … In addition, Baby Lock donated seven sewing machines to the Philly chapter. These machines are used at our hospital sewing days with the patients along with other community events.”/p>p>Local chapters of Ryan’s Case for Smiles regularly create pillowcases and deliver the finished product to approximately 330 hospitals across the United States./p>p>“Pillowcase sewing days are held several times throughout the month, which enables our chapters to supply pillowcases to hospitalized children in addition to allowing volunteers to try out a Baby Lock serger,” said Kerr./p>p>“We are very proud and honored to be a part of this great cause,” Jeffery said. “We will continue to help and support all we can.”/p>p>The Baby Lock Eclipse DX serger features Jet-Air Threading™, which takes thread through all three machine loopers with the press of a button. The company will mark the occasion with a year of special events and promotions (to be announced) throughout the year./p>p>To learn more about Tacony Corporation, visit the company website, a hrefhttp://www.Tacony.com target_blank>Tacony.com/a>./p>p>strong>About Tacony Corporation: /strong>/p>p>Founded in 1946 by Nick Tacony, Tacony Corporation is a privately held manufacturing and distribution company operating in four strategic business units: sewing, home floor care, commercial floor care, and ceiling fans. That’s what happened during the annual Baby Lock Tech (BLT) sewing convention, held Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 in St. Louis. The four-day event concluded with the inaugural BLT fashion show on Sept. 1, highlighting both the massive talent of the Baby Lock sewing community and the impressive Baby Lock sewing, serging, embroidery and quilting machines./p>p>The BLT 2015 fashion show featured stunning garments created by the Baby Lock Education Team on Baby Lock machines. Twenty team members designed and constructed 22 garments ranging from children’s wear to evening to bridal gowns. The fashions were displayed in a runway show presented to a packed audience of Baby Lock retailers./p>p>“They poured their hearts and souls into their creations because, typically, our retailers see their creativity on a much smaller scale when they are traveling to events and presenting to consumers,” said Baby Lock National Education Manager Diane Aholt, who organized the runway show. “This event really allowed them to spread their wings and show off their talents and sewing capabilities.”/p>p>Retailers attending BLT were treated to a special preview showing of the garments, and were given the exciting opportunity to view each piece up close and chat with the educators/designers about their creations. Aholt and fellow Baby Lock trainer Margo Morris later emceed the runway show.strong>a hrefhttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Wedding-Dress.jpg target_blank>img classalignright wp-image-1728 srchttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Wedding-Dress-200x300.jpg altWedding Dress width168 height252 srcsethttp://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Wedding-Dress-200x300.jpg 200w, http://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Wedding-Dress-100x150.jpg 100w, http://www.babylockmediakit.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Wedding-Dress.jpg 467w sizes(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px />/a>/strong>/p>p>Highlights of the Baby Lock Tech inaugural fashion show include:/p>p>strong>Wedding Dress/strong>/p>p>Countless hours of machine embroidery and handwork went into Phyllis Summerville’s BLT wedding dress.
