In the Faculty of Engineering of theUniversity of Porto I have taught courses on physics and differentialequations. I also enjoy programming and have written programs to helpsolve problems in physics, to publish my lecture notes making themmore accessible, and to generate exams and speed up their grading andpublication of the results./p>/section>section>h3>Research/h3>p>I am currently interested in Quantum Computing, Computer Algebra(CAS) and E-learning Systems./p>p>My research career started in the area of Theoretical ParticlePhysics, which was the subject of my Ph. D. When I accepted a teachingposition in the Department of Chemical Engineering at FEUP in 1992,that research area was no longer germane to my teaching duties. I thendecided to start research in the area of Physical Properties of Food;I proposed several senior projects for the B. S. Program in ChemicalEngineering and participated in a European Project and a CYTEDproject./p>p>In 1994 a new B. S. program in Computer Science was created at FEUPand I expressed my interest in teaching the two semesters of Physicsproposed for that program, with the prospect of starting research inComputational Physics. Around that time I first heard of thenew em>World Wide Web/em> and I started creating Websites andexploring their advantages for teaching. At the root of the success ofthat new technology was information sharing using open standards. Ithus became keen on Free Software and started using itexclusively./p>p>I joined the ATLAS collaboration at the em>Large HadronCollider/em> of CERN in 2001. That opened the possibility of engagingsome of my engineering students in areas that support particle physicsexperiments: GRID clusters, databases for experiment management andcontrol, and information systems. Being such a large experiment, ATLASinvolves several thousand researchers; to have any significantcontribution in that project, one must participate in many meetings invarious locations. That task became incompatible with my teachingduties, so I had to abandon that project./p>h3>Education/h3>ul> li>Ph. D. in Physics, 1990, University of Rochester, NY, USA.
