Once measured the CMM would automatically send offsets to the Mori Seiki NTX2000 cnc machining center for lights out operation. I also designed a custom enclosure for the CMM using extruded aluminum t-slot rails and plexiglass panels. It was a problem that was presented by Bell helicopter to test gears such as the ones on the Osprey Tilt Rotor aircraft. The goal of this project is to design a fixture capable of testing a variety of spur and bevel gears in order to evaluate their fatigue life and their ability to withstand forces of differing magnitudes. Here were the specs:The shaft of each gear must be adjustable in the axial direction in order to accommodate gears having a diameter of up to 10 inches (245 mm), and be able to rotate to allow bevel gear alignment of up to 110 degrees. The fixture must be self-enclosed with the ability to hold lubrication. The testing process must allow for filming of the gears, so the casing material must be transparent. The system must also be able to accommodate a maximum power of 150 hp (112 kW) and a maximum input shaft speed of 10,000 rpm.
