The project is being led by the Arts Assassins, South London Gallery’s young people’s forum.A £49,900 grant will facilitate the group of young people to work with PHF and a range of other partners including the Wellcome Library, the Science Gallery at King’s College, and community partners Peckham Vision and the Wilderness Wood. The project, which will run until autumn 2018, will see the group work alongside a historian-in-residence, heritage experts and artists to investigate the Peckham Experiment./p>p>The project is one of two National Lottery projects which will mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the NHS next year. Stuart Hobley, Head of HLF London, said: “These two projects will offer a fascinating insight into the development of healthcare in the UK, and the incredible history of one of the most important institutions in this country. Childrendirect their own learning and they get support, to read for example, when theyare ready. There are boundaries of course - everyone must attend the morning meeting,have lunch together and tidy up - but they make their own plans as to how tospend their time. As we talked, all the children engaged purposely in their ownactivity, whether art, imaginative play or on the zip wire. Children explainedthe signs they have developed and agreed upon, for example to indicate theywant to make a point or respond.  They pass the talking stick towhoever has the next turn to speak.  A child offers that he is afraidof heights. Others agree, while some explain they have different feelings. Theleader of the meeting encourages contributions and several children suggestways this fear might be overcome for example by trying out a small challenge ortelling yourself you are safe.  Proposals are invited and one childwho feels angry is encouraged to put his proposal, reminded of previousdiscussions and eventually wins his point on a vote. He is encouraged tocontribute to developing rules to make it work. Plans for the day are voicedand include making a birthday card for a parent, working on computer animation,activities with friends and no plans. No child is obliged to speak when theydon’t want to. The process holds the space for contribution so conflict can beworked through./p>p>The leader ofthe meeting is chosen democratically and everyone has a chance to lead shouldthey choose. There is nothing like seeing a 6 year old lead a group oframbunctious people expertly through a meeting! Sometimes a group decision ismade that a specific person should lead, or if a child may request to leadperhaps because of a birthday or moving away. /p>p>We saw children of many nationalitiesfinding their voice and working together. This doesn’t just happen.  Ademocratic culture has to be developed, nurtured and reinforced.  Thequiet child finds that their contribution is valued, the interrupter learnsfrom her peers that her behaviour is counter-productive.  Whenchildren first arrive they may not come with the habit of directing their owntime, but the experience of freedom and the example of peers are good teachers.For example, children who may not have had the chance for physical activity maydiscover that they love the outdoors and physical challenge. It can be exhausting fending off the powers and structures that arethreatened by creativity or simply do not understand its value. Indeed the Peckham Experiment, as it became known, was called by its founders ‘a study of the living structure of society’.  A recent meeting of those whose lives have been influenced by Peckham showed that its legacy is alive and that the belief in human potential, humane systems and human scale development has a powerful resonance today.  br />/p>p>On Saturday 19th September members old and new gathered for conversation and reflection to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Centre in St Mary’s Road.  The subject of our enquiry, now as then: what is health and what are the conditions for cultivating it in individuals, families and communities?  br />/p>p>Colin Ward wrote that the Peckham Experiment provides ‘an empirical verification about our deepest convictions’.  Those convictions about freeing people to live well were strongly articulated and shared in our conversation. For Pam Elven, what had mattered to her as a child at the Pioneer Health Centre was the opportunity to satisfy her curiosity, try out new experiences and make friends.  For her sister Vi health meant mental wellbeing and her memories were of the freedom of play, a feeling she had carried into adult life.  Dorothy Batten remembered summers at Oakley Farm where this found out what it was like to milk a cow and help with the harvest, a novel experience for an urban child.  /p>p>What former members said that had discovered at Peckham about themselves and living life to the full turned out to have meaning for the subsequent generations represented amongst those who gathered in the Nines, itself a tribute to the energy of community urban renewal. Jini Rawlings pointed out how the building at the Pioneer Health Centre had helped create the conditions for developing health. Eileen Conn of Peckham Vision explained how her discovery of the ideas that animated the Peckham Experiment confirmed her own work as a community activist, promoting thriving and diverse local economies hidden below the view of the corporate world. ‘The exchange of social nutrients’ seemed to describe what she has done in enabling people in her community to network and exchange information.   /p>p>Emily Charkin acknowledged her debt to Rosemary Fost, campaigner and thinker, who had put the Peckham Experiment at the centre of her thinking, despite never having visited it in person. Emily and her family are putting their inspiration into practice at the Wilderness Wood in East Sussex where they are creating an environment where their children learn freed from the constraints of formal schooling.  Margaret Hannah is tackling the barriers that NHS staff encounter in thinking differently and creating more humane cultures in healthcare.
