How do you conquer resistance, advocate and sell your design? /p>p>An often misunderstood and unconsidered part of the design process is the act of pitching your ideas. em>Pitching/em> means building a compelling case, presenting your findings, and persuading and facilitating outcomes for the benefit of the user. /p>p>After some consideration, I put together a list of eleven ways we could better advocate for User Experience./p>ol>li>Always do your research—this means before, during and after the project./li>li>Learn to be a great facilitator and work with your stakeholders.br />/li>li>Use stories to communicate your ideas, and focus less on findings./li>li>Vary your techniques. Every project is different and should require different methods./li>li>Stay Lean. This means less deliverables, more results, and cross-functional teams.br />/li>li>Keep stakeholders and team members close to users. This close connection will form awareness and empathy.br />/li>li>Make your process transparent. This will keep you accountable and increase trust and collaboration./li>li>Create physical artifacts that are easily soluble, consumable, scalable and accessible.br />/li>li>Don’t take critique so personally. Healthy dialogue is a key part of a collaborative and iterative design process./li>li>Understand what stakeholders need and align your actions with those needs.br />/li>li>Stop jumping to create solutions and focus on affecting user behaviour and solving their problems./li>/ol>p>How do you win over the hearts and minds of others to bring the “right design” to life?/p>div classpostmeta>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/67758193580/advocating-for-user-experience>11 years ago/a> a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/67758193580/advocating-for-user-experience styletext-transform:lowercase;>Notes (0)/a>/div>/div>div classphoto post>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/image/58081356413>img srchttps://64.media.tumblr.com/6d779d615cf4aa7748ada0299213b3af/tumblr_mrfoi7AIYo1rbi2soo1_500.png altWell thought out article that explains the incorrect assumptions about what User Experience is.Read it now—“UX is not UI”/>/a>p>p>Well thought out article that explains the incorrect assumptions about what User Experience is./p>p>Read it now—“a hrefhttp://www.helloerik.com/ux-is-not-ui target_blank>UX is not UI/a>”/p>/p>div classpostmeta>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/58081356413/well-thought-out-article-that-explains-the>11 years ago/a> a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/58081356413/well-thought-out-article-that-explains-the styletext-transform:lowercase;>Notes (3)/a>/div>/div>div classtext post>h2>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/56165198897/5-principles-for-improving-user-experience title 5 Principles For Improving User Experience>5 Principles For Improving User Experience/a>/h2>p>First off, there is no “magic bullet” method for improving user experience. You can have a rock-solid process, a stellar team and the best available tools and still miss the boat./p>p>When I attempt to answer questions like em>how do I improve my product’s user experience?/em>, I’m extremely tempted to answer with a more analytical response, however there are so many others who have really nailed the processes and methods that could be employed./p>p>Instead, I’ve put together 5 simple principles that have helped me make decisions along the way. /p>ol>li>Observe and listen to your users, carefully and attentively—understand their needs, goals and pains. /li>li>Base decisions about design on your awareness of context. /li>li>Build to learn, build early, and continuously adapt and improve based on what you learn./li>li>Focus on simplicity and stay true to product values./li>li>Leverage data to make responsible decisions about direction—rely on the previous 4 principles when there is uncertainty. /li>/ol>p>Remember that as a UX practitioner you have a powerful influence on decisions about product design. Always strive to be aware, informed, practical and responsive. Oh… and a healthy amount of optimism would be helpful, as well./p>p>So, em>how do you/em> tackle UX improvement?/p>div classpostmeta>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/56165198897/5-principles-for-improving-user-experience>11 years ago/a> a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/56165198897/5-principles-for-improving-user-experience styletext-transform:lowercase;>Notes (1)/a>/div>/div>div classtext post>h2>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/55029305875/responsive-prototyping-for-multi-device-ux title Responsive Prototyping for Multi-device UX>Responsive Prototyping for Multi-device UX/a>/h2>p styletext-align: center;>/p>figure classtmblr-full data-orig-height239 data-orig-width500>img altmulti-device dimensions classcontentImage srchttps://64.media.tumblr.com/026919f6a3bcae22c156674aeb7687b8/b333462aa323d5fc-ce/s500x750/8d95da863dc8a21daaca4c43eb52208e37cfa3a3.gifv data-orig-height239 data-orig-width500 width500 height239 />/figure>p>Despite what a game-changer responsive design has been for the Web, it’s become a daunting prospect for UI/UX designers to accommodate. We’re faced with the task of understanding shifting context, modelling using limited available tools and ultimately making impactful decisions about designs that will degrade as the mobile landscape changes./p>p>Traditionally, there have been robust tools like Axure and Balsamiq employed to rapid prototype product designs, but at the time of writing this post, they fall somewhat short when developing for the real-life use of products that span multiple devices and screens./p>p>So, em>what/em> do we do?/p>p>Until we find the a hrefhttp://uxunicorn.com target_blank>unicorn/a> of responsive prototyping tools, I earnestly support the use of frameworks like a hrefhttp://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/index.html target_blank>Bootstrap/a>, a hrefhttp://foundation.zurb.com/ target_blank>Foundation/a> and a hrefhttp://foundation.zurb.com/ target_blank>Skeleton/a> as means to prototyping for cross-screen experiences. It lowers debt and waste by eliminating heavy documentation and disposable deliverables, presents us with accurate real-world usage, and reducing misinterpretation as your design is handed off to a technical team./p>p>So, em>how/em> do we do it?/p>p>A potential workflow could look like this:/p>p>Sketching (whiteboard, paper) → br />Presentation and feedback → br />Define patterns, breakpoints and other variables → br />Modelling using responsive prototypes → br />Testing → br />Rinse and repeat/p>p>Another concept that I’m becoming more comfortable with is taking a highly collaborative approach while creating early stage artifacts. Design studio, pattern libraries and a hrefhttp://www.gogamestorm.com target_blank>gamestorming/a> activities encourage technical and non-technical team members to participate in the design process. The challenge for us UX’ers working with design for mobile is that as the mix of contexts (screens, platforms, localities, etc.) becomes more complex and unpredictable, it makes sense to move from lower fidelity to modelling real world use as quickly as we possibly can./p>p>If you have any thoughts or ponderings, please feel free to comment on what you are doing to conquer the responsive prototyping beast./p>div classpostmeta>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/55029305875/responsive-prototyping-for-multi-device-ux>11 years ago/a> a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/55029305875/responsive-prototyping-for-multi-device-ux styletext-transform:lowercase;>Notes (1)/a>/div>/div>div classtext post>h2>a hrefhttps://shaneaustin.com/post/54532471014/get-unstuck-from-creative-quicksand-with-brian title Get Unstuck from Creative Quicksand with Brian Eno’s “Oblique Strategies”>Get Unstuck from Creative Quicksand with Brian Eno’s “Oblique Strategies”/a>/h2>p styletext-align: center;>/p>figure classtmblr-full data-orig-height293 data-orig-width500>img altimage classcontentImage srchttps://64.media.tumblr.com/5d0a7335d77dcabe5cd59e5e81b24c7c/e64601ca0bd69848-aa/s500x750/4c1f04517fc547753d316aa050d22a9502f04dd2.png data-orig-height293 data-orig-width500 width500 height293 />/figure>p>In 1975, legendary musician Brian Eno and painter Peter Schmidt collaborated on tool to em>hack /em>creative block.
