Stock images are defined by our western visual culture and can be seen as a reflection of our society. With the rise of image banks since 1920, photography was vigorously transformed into a commodity. We meet Smittie, a woman in a modern world who is suffering under the predictive control of the Masters of Fact. The idea of a singular truth has been abandoned. In stead, multiple Reality Channels have been set up by the Masters. This mandatory network of truth production systems is run by an army of agents and algorithms in service of the Masters. Every aspect of living has now been completely datafied and automatized and predictability is the highest currency. Leaving the people numb and snoozing like zombies, stuck in their own devices and blindly following the recommendations.. br>br> But in the shadows the resistance is rising. An underground fuck-the-algorithm movement is fighting these predictive powers and Smittie joins these troopers in a mission to find a way out of this predetermined dystopia. br>br> This story investigates the potential of fiction as a vehicle for meaningful change. More specifically it uses the genre of science fiction to help offer tools of resisting automation and predictive control in the now.br>br> written & designed by Elki Boerdambr> cover illustration: Michel Keppel /div> /div> /div> /div> div classgrid-item grid-item--width2 > div classcontainer> img srcimg/web59.jpg altAvatar classimage> div classoverlay> div classtext> span classtitle>When an image finds herself in an echo chamberbr> 2022/span>br>br>br> video / 00:09:03br>br> In the work When an image finds herself in an echo chamber (video) we see an image floating in her own echochamber where she questions her own existence. Working based on intuition for me means working with (un)definable aspects of memory and association. We explored the power images hold to shape the ways we see the world and the kinds of stories that can emerge when they encounter one another. br>br> By inviting the participants to embody the images from their archive and and write dialogues between them, we considered how preserving the strange, uncanny, unwanted, irrelevant or even ugly images allows us to embrace and remember the parts of ourselves that share those qualities. Taking one image as a case study I worked back on how association can establish an image archive within one image. And how from dealing with these archives new narratives can arise. br>br> This exploration was presented in a lecture at the Retrouvailles symposium at Fanfare Amsterdam. /div> /div> /div> /div> div classgrid-item grid-item--width2> div classcontainer> img srcimg/web37.jpg altAvatar classimage> div classoverlay> div classtext> span classtitle >xkcomk8byd911.jpg /span>br>br> /div> /div> /div> /div> div classgrid-item> div classcontainer> img srcimg/web03.jpg altAvatar classimage> div classoverlay> div classtext> span classtitle > Youtube books /span>br>br> series of zines /div> /div> /div> /div> /div>/div>/body>script> $(.grid).masonry({ itemSelector: .grid-item, columnWidth: .grid-sizer, gutter: 20, percentPosition: true,});/script>script> var $grid $(.grid).imagesLoaded( function() { // init Masonry after all images have loaded $grid.masonry({ // options... }); });/script>/html>
