The Angels Branch of the Sierra Railroad in Californias Mother Lode, built between Jamestown, CA and Angels Camp, CA began operation in 1902. It travelled deep into the Stanislaus River canyon, traversing several switchbacks on the steep grades down to the Stanislaus river and back up. The branchline took a big hit during the great depression and finally was abandoned in 1937.
